Revision – Using Fire Hydrants for Training
(Updating Training Bulletin 2012-019)
Please note the following revisions to our list of hydrants available for training use as per advice from Kitchener Utilities:
Removed from KFD Training:
220 Hansen Ave – Private Hydrant – Peter Hallman Ball Park
95 Washburn – Hydrant #3068 (due to development in area)
Witmer Rd and Mannheim Rd – Hydrant #4039 (no longer CofK property)
New for KFD Training:
1516 Glasgow St. (12” dead end hydrant; near parking lot for Hydrocuts Trails) (see attachment)
Criteria for training with hydrants:
- Crews are encouraged to locate and use dead end hydrants in their station areas to assist with main system flushing (Consult your water commission maps for locations).
- Water usage for training is subject to current Municipal/Regional bylaws that may limit use of water in peak hours.
- Reporting hydrant use for follow-up maintenance by Utilities staff has not changed:
- Before Use:
- Confirm with Utilities Dispatch (@2529 / 6530 ext 3) that intended hydrant is available
-
- After Use:
- Notify Utilities Dispatch (@2529 / 6530 ext 3) of hydrant used (include hydrant #)
- Notify Utilities Dispatch (@2529 / 6530 ext 3) of approx. amount (in litres) of water flowed
- All hydrant sites are under continuing review.
- Kitchener Utilities does not maintain private hydrants, even those on City property, however total volume of water used must still be reported to Utilities Dispatch (@2529 / 6530 ext 3).
Some Additional Suggestions for Hydrants (hydrant #’s):
Station 1 – 5637 Private (Budd)
Station 2 – 1656 Private (Aud); 4036 Cedarview Pl; 2533 Crestview Pl; 7499 Riverview Pl
Station 3 – 1656 Private (Aud); 3420 East Ave (Armories)
Station 4 – 3586, 3588, 3589 Wabinaki Dr; 1162 Fairview Mall
Station 5 – 4411 (1516 Glasgow St)
Station 6 – 5637 Private (Budd)
Station 7 – 5637 Private (Budd)
NOTE: Reminder when operating hydrants: Open/Close the first/last 3 turns slowly to reduce potential for water hammer inside the water mains. Kitchener Utilities staff measured 2200 L/min from our hydrants after the first 3 turns so that is a lot of flow to stop suddenly if operating too fast.
